Cortes Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week|
Sept. 20, 2017
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer senior Sophie Cortes has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Cortes, from Newhall, California, scored three of the Rebels' four goals in a pair of 2-1 wins over CSU Bakersfield at UC Riverside over the weekend. In Friday's contest against the Roadrunners, the midfielder scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner in the 81st minute. At home against the Highlanders Sunday, Cortes' penalty kick in the 47th minute broke a scoreless tie in the eventual 2-1 win. The senior has been stellar in the attack for the Rebels in 2017, leading the team with seven goals and 18 points. Her play has helped UNLV to an 8-1 record through non-conference play - a program-best - while she leads the Mountain West in goals, assists (4) and points.
For her performance, Cortes was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week, becoming the fourth Rebel this season to earn the nod.
UNLV heads out on the road for the start of conference play this weekend, taking on New Mexico Friday night at 6:30 p.m. PT and San Diego State Sunday at noon. Both matches will be available to watch on the Mountain West Network.
