Rebels Begin Defense Of MWC Title

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team (5-4-3) begins defense of its Mountain West Conference championship title from a year ago this weekend at Air Force and Wyoming. The Rebels open league play against the Falcons on Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm in Colorado Springs, and follow with a Noon contest in Laramie, Wyo. on Sunday.

UNLV won its' first-ever MWC regular season title in 2004 after finishing with a school-record best 5-1 conference record. They are coming into this weekend on a two-game win streak, after winning both games of their own Rebel Classic by a combined 7-0 score (3-0 over Utah Valley State, 4-0 over Creighton), and were also bolstered by the return of all-conference goalkeeper Jenna Huff, who missed the first 10 games of the year due to a broken foot. UNLV is paced offensively by sophomore forward Katie Carney, who is second in the conference in points with 13 (five goals, three assists). Freshman Ciera Nero has started every game in goal thus far for the Rebels, and is fourth in the MWC in GAA (0.85) and second in saves (54), and split time in the net with Huff last weekend.

Air Force brings a 4-8-1 record into Friday's game, and have lost five of its last six games, though they do have a 3-0 win over Idaho State at home on Sept. 30 in that stretch. The Falcons are led by Brittney Perkowski (four goals, one assist, nine points), and Meredith Benson (three goals, six points). Two players have split time in goal, with Erin Wallace owning a 1.45 GAA and 23 saves on the year, while Jennifer Drew has a 1.70 GAA and 22 saves.

Wyoming is 4-3-3 on the year, and 3-1 at home, with the lone loss coming in its last game, 1-0 to Oregon on Oct. 2. The Cowgirls's boast the league's leading scorer in senior Mercy Adetoye (six goals), while Tamika Wilson is also dangerous with four goals and one assist for nine points. The net for the Cowgirls is also manned by two players, Jamie Scarcliff (0.87 GAA, 11 saves) and Ashley Sheppard (1.62 GAA, 18 saves).
