LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer captured its third Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season as redshirt sophomore Michaela Morris earned the award after a two-goal performance in two Rebel wins over the weekend.
Morris, a local product out of Henderson, has had a breakout sophomore campaign. She led the team with two goals in a pair of UNLV wins against Colorado State and Wyoming at home. In Friday's 3-1 victory over the Rams, Morris' score in the 83rd minute made it 3-1 and sealed the win. On Sunday against Wyoming, Morris broke a scoreless game in the 22nd minute to give the Rebels an early lead they never relinquished. For the weekend, the redshirt sophomore had eight shots total, with five of them being shots on goal. The forward now has seven goals and 18 points this season, both career highs, and ranks second on the team in both categories only behind senior leader Sophie Cortes.
This is Morris' second career league honor and is UNLV's 50th overall. Morris previously earned the award after scoring four goals in two games on the opening weekend of 2016.
The Rebels (12-3, 4-2) will be on the road for the next two weekends, playing four of their five remaining regular season games away from Peter Johann Memorial Field. Next up is a trip to Northern California, where they will face Fresno State on Friday, October 13 and San Jose State on Sunday, October 15.
