Shoughro Named MWC Player of the Week
Oct. 20, 2008
LAS VEGAS - For the second time in the last three weeks, UNLV's Ashleigh Shoughro was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. This is the third weekly honor of the season for UNLV, and the second for Shoughro.
A Las Vegas native who played her freshman year at San Diego, the sophomore forward became UNLV's all-time season points leader after scoring seven points over the weekend in a pair of victories that moved UNLV into a tie for second place in the MWC. She now has 27 points (11 goals, five assists) on the year, breaking the previous record of 25 set by Annii Magliulo in 2002, and her 11 goals are tied for the single season record set by Magliulo in 2002 and Anita Pedford in 2001.
Against Wyoming on Friday, she scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute on a shot from seven yards out that gave UNLV a 1-0 lead. She then assisted on the third goal of the game by UNLV, scored by Brianna Moore, in the 3-1 victory. Her goal came on her only shot of the game.
Shoughro then scored the game-winner against Air Force on Sunday, sending a shot to the top right corner in the 9th minute. She then posted her first career multi-goal game by scoring her second goal in the 41st minute when she stole the ball at midfield, and took it all the way in before scoring from 10 yards out to give UNLV a 3-0 lead, in a game the Rebels would eventually win by a 4-0 score.
UNLV will return to action on Friday, Oct. 24, when it takes on TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, in a 5 pm (PST) contest.
