Oct. 25, 2004
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Katie Carney was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week, marking the third week this season a Rebel player has earned the honor, the conference announced on Monday. The weekly honor is the first in her career for Carney, while Jessica Brown and Jessica Destito were also named Offensive Players of the Week earlier in the season.
Carney, a native of Lake Forest, Calif., came off the bench to score two second-half goals against Air Force to lead the Rebels to a 3-0 victory on Sunday. With the score tied at 0-0 after the first half, Carney notched her first goal off a pass from Angie Inzana at 57:04, then later intercepted a pass from an Air Force defender to score unassisted in the 88th minute. With the two scores, she now leads the team with four goals, and is second on the squad with nine points.
The Rebels, 11-3-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, will finish the regular season in a conference showdown at San Diego State on Saturday at 1 pm. UNLV is looking to claim its first-ever MWC title, as the Aztecs are tied for first with UNLV with a 3-0-2 record, and the Rebels would claim the regular season championship with a victory.
