Four Named Academic All-District|
Nov. 1, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - A school-record four UNLV players were voted to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII Women's Soccer teams, the organization of sport information directors (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. That tops the previous record of three set by last year's squad. Kylie Wassell and Courtney Botelho were both named first team, the first Rebels on the first team since Katie Carney in 2007, and both now advance to the national ballot, while Caitlin Allen and Jenn Wolfe were second team selections.
Wassell, a junior and Las Vegas native, has started every game in goal over the past three seasons, and earned her first All-Mountain West season honor this week as she was named to the second team. Thanks to a shutout in Wednesday night's MW quarterfinal win over Fresno State, Wassell has tied the school single-season record with 10 shutouts, and she also has 65 saves and a 0.80 GAA this season. A secondary education major, she has had a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA every single semester. This is Wassell's second career academic honor, as she was a second-team selection in 2011.
Also making the jump to the first team from a second-team honor in 2011 is Botelho, a junior midfielder from Molilani, Hawaii. Named to the All-MW first team on Tuesday, Botelho has three points on the year (one goal, one assist), and holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA with a major in kinesiology.
Allen, a senior defender and native of San Diego, Calif., is the first Rebel to earn three academic all-district honors in her career, as she was on the third team in 2010 and second team in 2011. A first-team All-MW selection as well, Allen anchors the UNLV defense that has shut out seven of its last nine opponents, and also has two goals on the year, including one game-winner. She currently carries a cumulative GPA of 3.51 with a major in environmental studies.
Wolfe, a junior forward from Olathe, Kan., earned her first career academic honor. She exploded offensively this season, as she currently has 12 goals in 2012, second-best in UNLV history, while her 26 points is good for third all-time. Her game-winning goal against Fresno State on Wednesday gave her six on the season, which ranks in the top 10 in the nation. Wolfe is majoring in hospitality management with a 3.55 cumulative GPA.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District teams. District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
