Monreal Exposes Home Run Power In Win|
Feb. 12, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (2-2) picked up their second win of the season, a 6-2 decision, Sunday evening with help from the long ball against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-4). Five of UNLV's six runs in the game were scored via the home run. Pauline Monreal had four RBI off of two dingers, while Samantha Juarez hit her first-career home run in the final game of the Sportco Kick-Off Classic hosted at Eller Media Stadium.
CSU Bakersfield jumped out of the gates quickly and put up the game's first score in the opening stanza. Amy Ricciardi recorded an RBI single that scored Emily Bliss, who was in scoring position following her own double.
Monreal pulled the Rebels even with her first homer of the game, an opposite-field shot to right in the second.
The Roadrunners threatened in both the fourth and fifth innings, but came away empty handed. They put runners on the corners with one out, but Caitlin Klepper helped herself out of the situation by turning a 1-3 double play off a soft line drive hit back up the middle.
In the fifth, CSUB loaded up the bases with one out after two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Jessica O'Connor (1-1) was then summoned from the bullpen in relief and promptly got a fielder's choice groundout and a strikeout to end the threat.
The Rebels took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth off Juarez's homer to left-center.
UNLV added four more runs to the scoreboard in the sixth to build a five-run cushion. Following a single by Paige Emerson and a walk issued to Tayler Van Acker, Tayler Aleman hit a seeing-eye RBI single through the left side to put UNLV up 2-1. Emerson scored on the single, while Van Acker and Aleman motored into scoring position. Monreal then smashed Sarah Hoag's (1-4) offering down the line in left and out of the stadium.
CSUB added a run in the seventh after the offense loaded up the bases following an error and two singles. With two out, Sara Smith was hit by an O'Connor offering that forced in the lone score of the inning. O'Connor buckled down after that and got Ashley Carter to strike out with a 3-2 count.
The win was O'Connor's first of the season, as she tossed 2.2 frames of relief. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out two.
Klepper went 4.1 innings in her first-career start. She was touched for one run, six hits and a walk.
Hoag was saddled with her fourth loss of the weekend after giving up six runs on seven hits. She struck out two against two walks.
Both wins by UNLV this season have been of the come-from-behind variety, as the Scarlet & Gray have allowed the visitors to score first.
UNLV returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 16 (5:15 pm), in its own Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels will face the Memphis Tigers in the second of three games on the schedule that day. BYU and Portland State open up the day's docket at 3:00 pm, while Memphis and Hawai'i close it out at 7:30 pm.
