Palm Springs, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (8-8) won its finale of the Palm Springs Classic held at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex Sunday over the Ohio State Buckeyes (6-8) 4-0. The win gives the Rebels a 2-3 record in the Classic and leaves them sitting at .500 heading into the UNLV Invitational next weekend.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Shannon Crisp cranked a two-out two-run homer to left field. Maggie Livreri came around to score after reaching on a walk. Following the homer, Caitlyn Paus took a base on balls and came around to score off of an errant throw to third as she was moving around the base paths on a double hit by Kendall Fearn. Paus was awarded home when the thrown ball went into the Rebel dugout. Fearn stopped at third on the play. Becky McDonald singled to the shortstop to bring the fourth and final run of the game home.
Christie Robinson (3-2) held the Buckeye bats at bay in the complete game effort. She allowed three hits with the first coming in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Buckeyes had only one scoring threat in the game and that was in the fifth, when they alternated between the singles with fielder's choice groundouts. The bases were loaded, but a groundout to Paus ended the offensive. In the seven inning outing, Robinson struck out six, while retiring 25 of 26 batters faced.
Next up for the Rebels is the UNLV Invitational which begins next Thursday, March 2 and runs through Sunday, March 5. The Rebels will face off against in-state rival Nevada, Reno at 5pm.
