LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
A two-run homer in the fifth inning and six UNLV softball errors helped San Diego State to a 6-2 win in the Mountain West opener for both schools on Thursday night at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels dropped to 16-14, 0-1 while the Aztecs improved to 19-10, 1-0.
San Diego State broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and scored four unanswered runs to end the game. A fielding error in the sixth inning allowed the go-ahead run to be scored. In the seventh inning, a balk scored one run after a throwing error allowed runners to get on second and third base. The Aztecs then hit a single to left field for the second run of the inning. After advancing the baserunner to third, a squeeze bunt knocked in the final run of the game.
UNLV had tied the game in the fifth inning on a RBI-ground out. Jamie DePippo singled to left field with one out, and Janine Petmecky followed that with a single through the right side to move DePippo to third base. Cordova then hit a ground ball to first base to allow DePippo to race home for the run.
The Rebels jumped out an early lead in the second inning. Kwyn Cooper led off with a bunt single, and Courtney Beavers drew a walk on a full count. Myranda Bueno advanced both baserunners with a sacrifice bunt, and Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez dropped a single right in front of the center fielder to knock in Cooper. Garie Blando then singled to load the bases, but a ground out and fly out left stranded all three baserunners.
Cooper had a no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning with two outs on a single to right center. The next San Diego State batter hit a two-run homer that allowed the Aztecs to take a 2-1 lead.
Cooper pitched her fifth complete game of the season and allowed four hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks with two strikeouts.
Petmecky was the only Rebel to collect more than one hit with two singles.
The Rebels face the Aztecs in the second game of the series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
