Rebels Tie Series Against Aztecs With a 4-2 Win

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball evened the three-game series against San Diego State with a 4-2 win on Friday night at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels improved to 17-14, 1-1 while the Aztecs dropped to 19-11, 1-1.

The Rebels jumped out to an early lead in the second inning with two runs scored. Francesca Foti hit a standup double to left field to lead off the inning, and then Kwyn Cooper singled to center field. After a sac bunt by Courtney Beavers advanced Cooper to second base, Alyssa Batastini loaded the bases with a walk on a full count. With the infield crowding in for Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez, she hit a ball just far enough over the shortstop’s extended glove at the edge of the infield to knock in Foti for the first run of the game. A grounder to second base by Garie Blando allowed Cooper to race home for the second run.

UNLV extended its lead to three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs Janine Petmecky singled through the left side and stole second base. Alyssa Cordova singled up the middle to bring home Petmecky.

San Diego State got its first run of the game in the sixth inning. After a baserunner reached first base on a fielding error, an infield single knocked in the baserunner with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt, Cordova made a jumping catch on a line out and throw it over to third baseman Jamie DePippo to end the inning with a double play.

The Rebels pushed the lead back to three runs in their turn at the plate in the sixth inning. Myranda Bueno singled to the shortstop with one out, and Chrissi Omalza doubled to left center to push Bueno over to third base. Yadao-Valdez hit a grounder to second base to score Bueno.

San Diego State’s rally in the seventh inning fell short with only one run scored. With two outs the Aztecs hit a single to right center and RBI-double to right center .After another single and runners on first and third base, the winning pitcher Petmecky got a ground out to DePippo at third base for the end of the game.

In her ninth start of the year in the circle, Batastini got herself out of two jams in the three innings pitched to help the Aztecs leave 12 runners on base in the entire game. With the bases loaded in the first inning, she got a groundout to DePippo at third to leave three on base. In the second inning the Aztecs had runners on first and second base before another groundout ended the inning. She retired the side in the third inning.

Petmecky relieved Batastini in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. Petmecky got two straight ground balls to get the force outs at home plate and ended the inning with a popup to the shortstop Blando.

Petmecky earned her second win of the season, surrendering six hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk in four innings pitched. Batastini pitched three scoreless innings and gave up five hits and three walks.

UNLV had seven different batters collect a hit, and Yadao-Valdez had two RBIs in the game.

The Rebels face the Aztecs in the final game of the series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
