Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ( - The UNLV softball team tried to battle back for a come from behind victory Friday night at San Diego State but couldn't quite complete the effort in a 5-3 loss to the Aztecs (27-17, 11-8) in the series opener. The Rebels fell to under .500 for the first time this year at 23-24 overall with their Mountain West record dropping to 6-13.

Senior Morgan Ettinger registered a new career high with her 15th-complete game of the season, but was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits. With the loss, the right-hander is now 12-15 on the season and is still looking for her first win since March 11.

San Diego State took the early lead in the bottom of second after a one-out single, a hit by pitch and a walk led to an Aztec run. Ettinger was able to get out of the jam with minimal damage as she got SDSU to pop up with the bases loaded and two outs.

The Rebels tied it up at one all in the top half of the next inning on Alyssa Navarro's team-leading sixth home run of the season. After the teams traded scoreless frames, SDSU broke the tie in bottom of the fourth with two runs on a leadoff single, a stolen base, a double and a pair of sacrifice groundouts.

Trailing 3-1, the Scarlet & Gray cut the lead back to one in the top of the fifth. Junior Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez got things started, reaching on an error to lead it off, then getting all the way to third after a Janine Petmecky single and a Gatlin sacrifice bunt. Navarro came through again with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Yadao-Valdez from third and make it 3-2. That's as close as UNLV would get though as San Diego State knocked in a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fifth to extend its lead to 5-2.

UNLV did try to make it interesting in the top of the seventh with a run on Navarro's third RBI of the game, but two fly outs ended the comeback attempt.

With rain in the forecast for Sunday, the Rebels and the Aztecs will play two on Saturday, with the first game starting at 3 p.m. and the second scheduled for 6 p.m. at SDSU Softball Field. Live video and stats will be available for both at
