SAN DIEGO, Cailf. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (23-26, 6-15) dropped Saturday's doubleheader at San Diego State (29-17, 13-8) contested at SDSU Softball Stadium on what was Senior Day for the Aztecs. The hosts claimed game one 9-1 in five innings of play before they won the second contest 8-6.

In game one, San Diego State struck first with a 3-0 lead in the home half of the second when Shelby Thompson took an offering from Breana Burke (3-4) to straight away center for a solo home run. The second run of the inning came from a Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez throwing error, which brought home Frankie Orlando followed by an infield single bringing home the runner from third.

UNLV countered in the third when Yadao-Valdez reached on fielder's choice and Janine Petmecky singled to lead off the inning. With runners at the corners and Myranda Bueno at the plate, Yadao-Valdez and Brianna Gatlin executed a perfect double steal as Yadao-Valdez scored, however, Gatlin was thrown out in between first and second base to end the inning.

Unfortunately, the Aztecs' lead in the second inning was all they needed as they scored six more insurance runs in innings three and four.

Marissa Moreno (11-5) earned the win for the Aztecs in a complete-game effort. Moreno was touched for one run off of three hits. She struck out two against one walk.

Burke was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in two innings. Masterson tossed the remaining two innings with six runs on eight hits while walking one.

In game two, SDSU struck first when Jenavee Peres scored from third on a sacrifice fly off of Morgan Ettinger. Peres had initially reached on a double and moved into scoring position when Sydnee Cable hit into a fielder's choice.

The Rebels tied up it in the second with a leadoff double by Masterson and an RBI double from Emily Vela to right center field.

UNLV was able to take the lead in the third thanks to a two-run home run by Justine Federe, her third of the season, however, SDSU stringed together six runs in the third inning as that was all they needed for the doubleheader and series sweep. After the first three batters reached base, Katie Byrd drove in the Aztecs' second run with a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded again after Ettinger walked Thompson, Jaylene Ignacio singled to Yadao-Valdez at third on a tough hop tying it at three-all. Senior Ashley Ercolano hit the go-ahead grand slam to make it 7-3 Aztecs.

The fifth inning saw Petmecky blast a solo home run to center field, her third of the season making it a three-run game, however, SDSU answered right back scoring another run off a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4.

UNLV did try to make it interesting in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run from Alyssa Navarro for her seventh home run of the season, but a strikeout from Federe ended the comeback attempt. Ettinger pitched her 16th-complete game of the season, but was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs (two earned) on 10 hits. With the loss, the right-hander is now 12-16 on the season and is still looking for her first win since March 11.

Erica Romero (10-5) picked up the win in four frames. She allowed four runs off of seven hits and struck out one. Moreno tossed the remaining three innings with two runs on two hits striking out two and walked one for her first save of the season.

UNLV returns home for its final series of the 2017 regular season next week. The San Jose State Spartans come to town for the three-game set that will run Thursday through Saturday. The first two games (Thursday and Friday) are scheduled for 6:00 pm starts, while first pitch for Saturday's "Senior Day" is slated for 12:00 pm.
