LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team made its first-ever appearance in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll this week after its 3-1-1 showing in the Sportco Spring Kick-Off Classic this past weekend. The Rebels, who sat in the receiving votes category (45th) in the preseason poll, jumped into the Top 25 with Georgia tied at #23.
The Rebels made some waves in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll as well. UNLV made a leap from 46th in the preseason poll to 26th in the this week's. The squad received a total of 67 votes, which was one shy of #25 Oregon State's 67 tally.
UNLV's push into the Top 25 was helped by wins over two nationally ranked squads last weekend. The team knocked off then-#14/11 Washington by a 7-4 margin before stunning #2/3 Arizona State in walk-off fashion (2-1). The Rebels picked up their first win of 2008 over Texas Tech. The squad's only loss came in extra innings to Loyola. The Ramblers went up 11-0 after 4.5 innings, but watched the Rebels rally for 11 runs in regulation. Unfortunately, Loyola scored the winning run in the eighth. The Rebels picked up their first tie since 1993 with a 4-4, five-inning stalemate vs. Washington Sunday night.
