Rebels Shine At Invite

IRVINE, Calif. - Three Rebel men each won two events, while freshman Bailey Kustermeyer claimed the 200 breast title as the UNLV men's and women's swimming teams competed in the UCI/Ayres Sprint Invitational and the UCI/Ayres Distance Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
In the sprint meet, UNLV won a total of seven men's events to take first place with a final team score of 802. Three Rebels all won two events each in the sprint events, with Johan Claar winning the 200 free in 1:42.22 and the 200 fly in 1:52.89. Tiger Christian took first in the 100 back (52.10) and the 100 fly (51.53), while Brandon Nelms was a winner in the 50 fly (23.07) and the 50 free (20.83). Also winning events for UNLV was Devin Phillips in the 200 IM (1:56.90).
On the women's side, Bailey Kuestermeyer won the lone event for UNLV, swimming a time of 2:17.49 in the 200 breast. Kim Bonney placed second in the 50 breast (30.07), Amanda Weinbrecht took second in both the 50 back (27.98) and the 200 back (2:08.29), and Marina Sandback was runner-up in the 50 free in a time of 24.23. The Rebel women finished with a score of 317 to place third.
Just a few Rebels participated in the distance meet. Claar won his third event of the day, and his 18th consecutive collegiate race after touching the wall in 9:33.31 in the 1000 free. Tamas Bosnyak also posted a win in the distance meet, swimming the 400 IM in 4:06.76. Three UNLV women earned fourth place finishes as well. Lani Seaman was fourth in the 1,000 free (10:40.87), Bailey Kustermeyer was fourth in the 400 IM (4:30.52), and Ana Danalakova was fourth in the 500 free (5:11.08).
UNLV will next swim on Friday, Jan. 20, hosting UC Irvine at 5 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
