ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's swimming and diving team easily handled New Mexico to win the Mountain West Conference opener between the two, 146-96 on Thursday afternoon. The meet was also the first of the season for both teams.
UNLV won with an impressive show of team depth, as seven Rebels combined to win eight of the nine individual swimming events, while also claiming both relay events. New Mexico's lone first place swims came in the 100 breast and the two diving events.
Leading the way for the Rebels was freshman Jessica Heim, a double-event winner in the 500 free (5:09.41) and the 1000 free (10:31.07). Other winners included Lara Sreibers in the 200 free (1:54.04), Madison Rousell in the 50 free (24.40), Lisa Gillespie in the 200 IM (2:08.86), Kate Herrington in the 100 fly (57.68), Friderika Szel in the 100 free (53.01), and Anja Crawford in the 100 back (59.24).
The 200 medley relay team of Krista Johnson, Gillespie, Herrington and Rousell finished first in a time of 1:47.28, while Herrington, Rousell, Megan Clark and Brittany Ozar won the 200 free relay in 1:37.65.
UNLV will next swim on Friday in the Arizona Relay Meet, hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, starting at 2 pm.
