SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a Mountain West Conference meet at Utah on Saturday afternoon, giving them a split for the weekend afer falling at BYU on Friday night. The Rebel men (2-1, 1-1 mwc) won 168 to 125, while UNLV (1-2, 1-1) took the women's meet by a score of 159-136.

UNLV was impressive in the men's meet, winning 12 of the first 14 events, and were keyed by Johan Claar's triple-win performance. The senior took both the 200 (1:42.11) and 500 (4:38.55) free, as well as swimming to first in the 200 fly in 1:54.42. Freshman Kier Maitland won the 1000 free (9:32.51) to give UNLV a sweep of the distance free events. Also winning events was Tamas Bosnyak in the 100 breast (59.11), Richard Hortness in the 50 free (21.63), Nicholas Blank in the 200 back (1:55.34), Devin Phillips in the 200 breast (2:06.76), and Peter Loring in the 100 fly (51.24). The Rebels swept both diving events, with Matt Arb claiming the 1-meter event with a score of 240.15 while Vincent English was first on the 3-meter board with a 266.70 score. UNLV also won the first relay of the meet, the 200 medley relay, as Tiger Christian, Phillips, Loring, and Hortness swam a time of 1:34.86.

The Rebel women were paced by three double-event winners. Bailey Kuestermeyer won the 200 fly (2:06.52) and 1000 free (10:29.79), Kim Bonney swept the breast events (100 breast in 1:05.36, 200 breast in 2:21.26) , and Marva Harpak took first in the 200 (1:54.06) and 500 free (5:11.41). Other winners included: Amanda Weinbrecht in the 100 back (58.05), Marina Sandback in the 100 free (52.01), and Lisa Gillespie in the 200 back (2:03.88). UNLV's 200 medley relay team of Weinbrecht, Bonney, Sandback, and Megan Hunt-Higgins claimed first with a swim of 1:45.55.

 

 

Both Rebel teams will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 16 at 2 pm in Fort Worth, Texas, taking on MWC rival TCU.
