Rebels Stand Second After Day One

UNLV's men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for five wins on the first day of action at the UNLV Winter Invite on Saturday at Buchanen Natatorium. The men claimed both relays on the night and the 50 free title to stand in second place, while the Rebel women are also second thanks to a one-two finish in the 500 free.
The three-day meet, featuring a total of 11 teams, continues on Sunday. The prelims start at 9:30 am, with the finals beginning at 5:30 pm.
UC Santa Barbara leads both the men's and women's standings, with 295 on each side. UNLV's men are second with 271, while TCU is third at 191. The Rebel women scored 240 on the first day for second place, with TCU in third at 209, and San Diego State fourth with 90 points.
The UNLV men began the night with a win in the 200 free relay, just touching out UCSB by .08 seconds, in a time of 1:22.15. The second UNLV win came in the 50 free, as Brandon Nelms swam a time of 20.42. Richard Hortness and Thomas Andolfsson also scored in the 50 free, finishing sixth and seventh in times of 21.15 and 21.22.
The final UNLV win was in the 400 medley relay, in a time of 3:21.31. Other highlights on the night included Johan Claar in the 500 free (fifth in 4:33.48), and Devin Phillips (second in 1:53.00), Tiger Christian (fifth in 1:56.01), and Tamas Bosnyak (eighth in 1:57.98) in the 200 IM.
Freshman Marva Harpak won the first individual title of the night, taking the 500 free in 4:57.22, while teammate Lani Seaman was right behind her in second place in 4:58.64 for the UNLV women. Other finalists included Bailey Kuestermeyer (second in 2:05.97) and Kim Bonney (2:09.92) in the 200 IM, Marina Sandback (fourth in 23.94), Katie Wronn (fifth in 24.00), and Amber Walker (seventh in 24.34) in the 50 free. Both UNLV relays finished in second place. Wendy Williams would win the 3-meter diving event with a score 271.75, but her event will not be scored into the team scoring until the final day.
