Swimming Opens Their Dual Meet Season at Buchanan Natatorium
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV Rebels swimming and diving teams opened their home dual-meet season with meets against Pacific and Nevada-Reno (women's) and Northern Arizona (men's).
The men handled Northern Arizona fairly easily, for their second win in three weeks. In the first meeting on November 1, UNLV defeated the Lumberjacks 155-91. Today was a similar result, as the Rebels won the meet 167-102. The Rebels won 12 of the 13 swimming events on the men's side. Petr Kratochvil had a solid day, winning three events. He took the 1000 free (9:33.74), the 200 butterfly (1:54.48) and the 200 IM (1:53.66). Tomasz Piotrowski was another multiple-event winner. After capturing the 200 freestyle with at time of 1:43.02, he finished first in the 500 free, clocking a time of 4:36.40. Mike Mintenko also won a pair of events, the 100 free (46.75) and the 100 fly (51.03), as did Erik Scalise in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.71) and 100 back (51.50).
In men's diving action, freshman Chris McCombs (239.40) edged out fellow UNLV teammate Lucas Richmond (239.15) in the 1-meter event.
On the women's side, the Rebels fell victim to their rivals from the north, as Nevada-Reno won the meet 192-106. However, UNLV was also victorious today with a 213-70 win over the University of the Pacific. Donna Wu had a good day, winning two of the Rebelís three successful events. She finished tops in both the 1000 free and the 500 free, with times of 10:28.48 and 5:04.51 respectively. Janel Frei captured UNLV's only other event, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.81.
The Rebels next travel to Arizona for a dual-meet on Saturday, November 22. They return home for their annual Winter Invite on December 13-15.
