Rebels Defeat Past Conference Foe UCSB
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Rebels traveled to Santa Barbara to take on former Big West Conference foe UCSB and defeated the Gauchos 138-99 in women's action and 139-104 on the men's side.
Leading the way for the women was Janel Frei. Frei swam to first place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:07.97), the 100 freestyle (53.61) and the 500 freestyle (5:08.29). She finished with a team-high 27 points. Sabrina Ferrari clocked a time of 2:08.20 as she captured the 200 butterfly event. Ashleigh Crowder and Allyson Brown also helped propel the Rebels to victory as they finished on top in their respective events. Crowder won the 200 back (205.71) and the 200 free (1:54.94) and Brown won the 1000 free with her time of 10:32.60, which was a personal-best. Donna Wu was UNLV's final first place finisher with a time of 5:08.29 in the 500 free.
On the men's side Erik Scalise had another solid day, winning two of his events. In the 200 IM he swam to a first place finish with a time of 1:51.46. His second win of the day came in the 200 breaststroke as he recorded a time of 2:04.21. Mike Mintenko finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.71 and Andrew Livingston took first pace in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.65 to help UNLV's cause. Tomasz Piotrowski rounded out the top finishes capturing his event, the 200 back (1:50.82).
The Rebels return home on January 24 to take on Utah. The meet will take place at Buchanan Natatorium on the campus of UNLV, beginning at 2:00pm.
