Rebels Dominate Utah in Dual Meet Action
LAS VEGAS - UNLV defeated the University of Utah in today's WAC matchup in the Buchanan Natatorium on the campus of UNLV. The Rebels captured both the men's and women's contest with a final tally of 163-90 in women's action and 160-83 on the men's side. UNLV's dual meet record now stands at 5-4 (women) and 5-2 (men). Both teams are currently receiving votes in the Speedo Americas' CSCAA Poll.
In men's swimming the Rebels caputured top finishes in all but one event. Mike Mintenko and Tomasz Piotrowski both took first place in two events to lead the Rebels to the easy victory. Mintenko finished with a time of 21.07 in the 50 freestyle and 49.23 in the 100 butterfly. Piotrowski captured his first place finishes in the 100 backstroke (51.29) and the 200 free (1:41.28). Newcomer Michael Rosen also had a solid day with victories in the 1000 free and the 500 free, clocking times of 9:28.38 and 4:34.93 respectively.
The women also fared well as the Rebels cruised to a victory led by Victoria Naess. Naess recorded times of 1:54.26 in the 200 free and 53.20 in the 100 free to take top billing in her events. Donna Wu secured the win in the 1000 free with her time of 10:39.96, over 40 seconds faster than the nearest Utah competitor. Janel Frei and Ashleigh Crowder finished on top in their respective races as well. Frei took the 400 individual medley with her time of 4:30.51, while Crowder swam to a win in the 100 back, recording a 58.26 finish.
The Rebels will swim against Brigham Young and Hawai'i next Friday and Saturday at the Buchanan Natatorium. The meet will begin at 5:00pm on both days.
