Women Split with UH and BYU at Buckanan Natatorium
LAS VEGAS - In dual meet action tonight the UNLV Rebels men's and women's teams took on conference rivals Hawai'i and BYU. The men were victorious in both matchups, defeating Hawai'i 181-52 and BYU 134-108. On the women's side, UNLV defeated Hawai'i 173-58 and lost their contest with the Cougars 108-133.
The premier matchup of the night turned out to be the Rebel men against BYU. An exciting meet throughout, UNLV was able to finally put the meet out of reach with their sweep of the 500 free. Freshman Michael Rosen was tops with 4:33.31, Petr Kratochvil took second (4:40.08) and Wayne Linner finished in third (4:40.89). The Rebels also managed a sweep of the 200 butterfly as Andrew Livingston (1:51.45), Petr Kratochvil (1:53.83) and Justin Jacobs (1:55.20) took one, two, three. Seniors Ryan Kelly and Mike Mintenko also helped the Rebels cause with their victories in the 50 free (20.78) and the 100 free (45.45), respectively. Erik Scalise recorded a time of 1:50.50 to take first in his event, the 200 individual medley.
The women's action was highlighted by performances by Ashleigh Crowder and Donna Wu. Crowder continued to shine as she finished with a time of 1:53.66 and a first place finish in the 200 free. She swam to another top finish in the 200 back, clocking a time of 2:05.24. Donna Wu captured the mile with her time of 17:34.01, and the other top finishes went to Janel Frei and Sarah Schneider. Frei took the 500 free with her time of 5:02.63, while Schneider took first place with a time of 2:23.99 in the 200 breast.
The three teams return to action tomorrow as they swim their second of two dual meets. The meet begins at 12:00pm in the Buchanan Natatorium on the campus of UNLV.
