Upset Bid Falls Just Short In Opener Jan. 24, 2014
BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The 50th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its 2014 dual-match season by falling just short against No. 43 Washington, 4-3, Friday in the first round of the sixth annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend tournament. Playing as part of the Berkeley, Calif., site at the Hellman Tennis Complex, the Lady Rebels now move into the consolation match Saturday starting at 10 a.m. vs. No. 66 Santa Clara. The Broncos fell 4-0 to the host Golden Bears earlier in the day. UNLV opened the afternoon by winning a thrilling doubles point by taking two of three matches, both in tiebreakers. Iren Kotseva and Aleksandra Josifoska downed Andjela Nemcevic and Julia Lukac 7-6 (7-2) on court three before Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina got by Elian Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu 7-6 (7-5) to clinch it at the top spot. Moving to singles, the Rebels got off to a slow start, dropping the first set on five of six courts. However, Batta, ranked 29th in the nation, did sweep Douglas-Miron 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 position to improve to 12--3 on the season. Shumilina eventually tied the match at 3 by rallying past Nemcevic using a super-tiebreaker at the fourth spot, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). The team match came down to court two and UNLV senior Josifoska was serving match point but ultimately lost 7-6 (11), 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) to Grace Ysidora to end it and improve the Huskies to 3-0. 2014 ITA KICK-OFF WEEKEND UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS RESULTS #43 WASHINGTON 4, #50 UNLV 3 Jan. 24, 2014 At Hellman Tennis Complex (Berkeley, Calif.)
