Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. ( - The UNLV women’s tennis team let another potential upset of a top 20 opponent slip through its hands Friday afternoon as No. 20 Arizona State held off the Rebels 4-2 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

UNLV, which lost 4-3 at No. 11 Cal last weekend, fell to 3-2 overall while the Pac-12’s Sun Devils improved to 3-1.

Early on, the Rebels were serving match point at No. 1 doubles but ultimately lost the point to the Sun Devils, which proved to be the difference in the overall outcome.

In singles, UNLV earned straight-set wins on courts one and four and was leading on court two when ASU clinched it.

NET NOTE: UNLV has never defeated Arizona State in 20 all-time meetings.

REBEL OF THE MATCH: By blowing past Ilze Hattingh, 6-3, 6-0, Aiwen Zhu improved to 5-0 in dual-match singles this season and an eye-popping 15-1 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup during her career.

STAT OF THE MATCH: Zhu and En-Pei Huang led No. 28 Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman 5-3 at the No. 1 doubles position but saw the Sun Devil duo win the final four points and earn their team a 1-0 lead.

QUOTABLE: “Another good battle with a top 20 team today. We had match point to clinch the doubles point and were in tight matches on most of the courts in singles. We will face another good team tomorrow so we have to prepare well as we get back on the courts in the morning.” -UNLV head coach Kevin Cory

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will stay in Tempe and take on Gonzaga in a neutral-site match Saturday. Doubles start at 10 a.m. PT.
