LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women’s tennis team improved to 6-0 at home this season with a convincing 4-1 win over Arizona on a sun-splashed Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 7-3 overall while the Wildcats of the Pac-12 Conference fell to 6-2.
UNLV won in doubles by taking both completed matches and then grabbed the first set on five of six courts. After falling behind 4-1 in the first set vs. Camila Westbrooks, Rebel sophomore En-Pei Huang stormed back to take 12 of the next 14 games and win 7-6, 6-0 in what became the team clincher. Rebel players were also leading on the remaining two courts when play was halted.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Aiwen Zhu and doubles teammate Huang improved to 18-4 this season with a 6-0 win at the top of the lineup and then Zhu quickly dispatched Devin Chypyha in singles, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Ranked 63rd in the nation, Zhu improved to 8-0 in duals and 17-6 overall this season.
STAT OF THE MATCH: When Arizona’s Talya Zandberg downed Samantha Li, 7-6, 6-0 on court five, it marked the first time all season that UNLV’s opponent scored a singles point during six matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
QUOTABLE: “I thought we came out ready to go in the doubles and that momentum carried over. We were able to control the points in singles against a talented Pac-12 squad.”
-UNLV Head Coach Kevin Cory
