Feb. 22, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 67th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team fell behind 2-0 but then won every remaining match Friday to down previously undefeated BYU 5-2 at a cool but sunny Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 5-3 while the Cougars fell to 4-1 in the programs' first meeting since BYU left the Mountain West after the 2011 season.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. UNLV's lone win came at the top of the lineup where Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic downed Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Nicolette Tran 8-3. For Pavlovic, it marked the senior's 71st career doubles win and moved her into a tie for seventh place all-time at UNLV with Claire Smith (2004-07).
In singles play, BYU quickly grabbed its second point with a win on court four. The Lady Rebels, however, then won four consecutive straight-set matches to clinch the comeback. Aleksandra Josifoska, ranked 19th in the nation, downed Desiree Tran, 6-2, 6-1, at the top spot while Batta improved to 7-0 in dual matches with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Morgan Anderson at No. 2; Pavlovic got by Sheehan-Dizon, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3; and Janine Erasmus prevailed 7-5, 6-0 over Mackenna Maddox at No. 5. The final match was the only one extended to three sets and UNLV's Iren Kotseva held off Aubrey Paul, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 on court six.
Next up, UNLV hosts Iowa State on Sunday beginning with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
