PALO ALTO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women’s tennis team saw its four-match win streak snapped with a 6-1 loss to No. 36 Stanford on a sunny but cool Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Rebels fell to 7-4 while the Cardinal, winner of 19 national championships, improved to 4-2.
The hosts won the doubles point to start the morning as the nation’s top-ranked duo of Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon clinched it with a hard-fought 6-4 win over No. 59 Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang.
In singles, the visitors were competitive on multiple courts but only Zhu scored for UNLV with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over 19th-ranked Michaela Gordon at the top of the lineup.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Aiwen Zhu, ranked 74th this week, is a perfect 9-0 in dual matches this season after posting Friday’s upset. The junior is a stunning 19-1 all-time playing at the No. 1 position.
STAT OF THE MATCH: Stanford was the fourth Pac-12 Conference opponent that UNLV has faced this season, having played at then-No. 11 Cal and then-No. 20 Arizona State before downing Arizona last week at home as part of the non-conference slate.
QUOTABLE: “I felt we fought well on most courts but also let opportunities slip away. Stanford will be one of the favorites to win it all again so it was good to compete well here. Aiwen really played well to earn another big win.”
-UNLV Head Coach Kevin Cory
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be off until hosting NAU March 15 starting at 10 a.m.
