LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Basking in 70-degree February temperatures, the 36th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team overcame getting swept in doubles play to knock off No. 47 Long Beach State on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 6-3 overall while the 49ers fell to 5-3.
LBSU began the morning by sweeping the three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. UNLV rallied in singles, however, taking four of the six matches.
Aleksandra Josifoska got her team on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 110th-ranked Rachel Manasse at the second position. Lucia Batta, ranked 50th in the nation in singles, improved to 19-6 overall and 9-0 in dual matches by winning her match at the top of the lineup, 7-6, 6-0 over Anais Dallara.
With the 49ers having won matches at spots three and six, it came down to a pair of Lady Rebel freshmen who were both pushed to third sets. Anett Ferenczi-Bako kept her team alive by finishing off Julie Luzar 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5; then Manon de Lanlay downed Klaudia Malenovska 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 for her biggest win as a collegian to seal the team's victory.
Next up, UNLV hosts No. 32 Texas Tech on Sunday beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all UNLV tennis matches is free of charge.
