LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team won its sixth straight match, 4-3 over No. 65 Washington State, on a warm March Tuesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
In what was the first meeting of the two programs since 2004, the Lady Rebels improved to 9-3 on the year and 8-2 all-time vs. the Pac-12 Conference Cougars. WSU fell to 10-5.
UNLV opened the morning by taking two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic downed Liudila Vasilieva and Lize Leenknecht, 8-5, at the top spot while Aleksandra Josifoska and Janine Erasmus got by Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe by the same score on court two.
In singles, UNLV won two straight-set matches to build a quick 3-0 lead. Batta, ranked 103rd, downed Googe 6-0, 6-4 at the second position while Iren Kotseva swept Leenknecht, 6-3, 6-1, on court six.
The fourth and clinching point, however, was much tougher to come by for the hosts. All four of the remaining matches went to three sets and Josifoska, ranked 24th, rallied to come through at the top of the lineup to seal it, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 over Vasilieva.
UNLV tomorrow hosts No. 22 Florida State in a rare Wednesday match, starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
