LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team split six singles matches but narrowly dropped the key doubles point at the start of the day in a 4-3 loss to Marshall on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels fell to 9-5 with their second straight loss while the Thundering Herd evened its record at 8-8.
UNLV won 8-2 at the second doubles position as Aleksandra Josifoska and Janine Erasmus downed Ellie Ball and Maria Voscekova 8-2. After the Herd won on court three, the point would come down to the top of the lineup and Diminika Zaprazna and Kara Kucin outlated Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic 9-8 to give their team a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, UNLV's Big Three got it done again with a trio of straight-set wins: Josifoska, ranked 24th, finished off Zaprazna, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1; Batta, ranked 103rd, swept Dana Oppinger, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2; and Pavlovic got by Voscekova, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3. Marshall won straight-setters of its own on courts four and five so all eyes turned to the No. 6 spot where Lady Rebel Iren Kotseva went three sets with Karlyn Timko but ultimately fell, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
Next up, UNLV hosts SMU on Saturday starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
