March 28, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Facing a lineup that boasts four ranked players, including two of the nation's top five singles competitors, the 51st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team was shut out 7-0 by No. 4 Stanford on Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels fell to 10-7 while the Cardinal, who were visiting Las Vegas for the first time since 2007, stayed perfect at 11-0.
Stanford swept three doubles matches in the morning for a 1-0 lead. Moving to singles, UNLV's top half of the lineup was impressive even in defeat.
Aleksandra Josifoska faced third-ranked Nicole Gibbs at the top spot and dropped a tough tiebreaker in the first set before falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Lucia Batta, ranked 57th and playing on the second court, had double set-point vs. fourth-ranked Mallory Burdette before dropping the first set and eventually the match in a super-tiebreaker, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). Nives Pavlovic, playing at No. 3, also made it tough on 45th-ranked Stacey Tan before falling 6-3, 7-5.
With their non-conference schedule now complete, the Lady Rebels turn their attention back to Mountain West play. UNLV hosts New Mexico on Saturday and TCU on Sunday. Both matches begin with doubles play at 10 a.m. and admission is free of charge.
