RENO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team made what is believed to be its first trip to Reno to play at its in-state rival and fell 4-3 to Nevada, Reno on Sunday at the Caughlin Athletic Club.
The Rebels dropped to 9-9 and 2-2 vs. league opponents while the Wolf Pack improved to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in the MWC. With the win, also UNR took a step toward gaining some ground in the Governor's Series sponsored by NV Energy. If the two teams do not face each other again during the Mountain West Tournament later this month, then the Pack get the three points. UNLV currently leads the second year of the series by the score of 18-9.
On Sunday, UNR opened with a 1-0 lead by taking two of three doubles matches. UNLV's only win came on court three where Iren Kotseva and Aleksandra Josifoska downed Caroline Konigsfeldt and Monika Maqusiak 8-2.
In singles, Rebel star Lucia Batta, ranked 58th, saw her seven-match winning streak snapped, 6-2, 6-3 to Michelle Okhremchuk at the top spot, which also marked the senior's first loss to a league opponent in a dual match since April 17, 2011.
The visitors' points came on court two where Josifoska improved her all-time record in MWC play to 25-1 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Sheila Morales at No. 2; court four where Santa Shumilina swept Konigsfeldt 6-3, 6-1; and court six where Paola Artiga downed Maqusiak 6-3, 6-2.
The Rebels will now look to regroup with a non-conference match on Friday vs. Southern Utah. Doubles begins at 10 a.m. and admission to the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
