Lady Rebels Roll Past Rams To Sweep Weekend
April 9, 2006
SAN DIEGO - The 48th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team completed a perfect weekend with a 6-1 neutral-site win over Colorado State on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
The Lady Rebels, who went 3-0 on their trip to Southern California, improved to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference while the Rams fell to 9-10 and 2-4.
UNLV began the morning by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles, 16th-ranked Elena Gantcheva remained undefeated in league play by winning her eighth straight match, 6-1, 6-2 over No. 121 Emily Kirchem, to improve to 30-8 on the year -- already the ninth-most single-season victories in school history. Gantcheva also moved into 10th place on the program's career singles victory list with a 61-16 mark in just two years on campus.
Also winning for UNLV was Nikol Dimitrova, who improved her sparkling freshman mark to 14-3 with a victory at No. 2 over Anne Anderson, 6-2, 5-2 retired. On court three, Sharon Marin routed Lauren Strasburger 6-0, 6-0 while Cindy Treber upped her senior record to 19-6 with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Carla Pallares at No. 4. Linda Tempelfelde closed out UNLV's scoring by improving to 13-4 in dual matches with a 6-4, 7-6 win on court six over Jasmin Singh.
"It's great to get three conference wins on the road," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We have now put ourselves in position going into next weekend to be playing for at least a share of the Mountain West championship."
Closing out its regular-season slate in Albuquerque, N.M., UNLV will face No. 25 TCU, which is the league's sole undefeated team, on Saturday and then take on 40th-ranked host New Mexico (4-1) on Sunday.
