Lady Rebs Down Wolf Pack

April 13, 2013

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV women's tennis team moved into position to earn valuable points for their side in the Governor's Series by downing Nevada, Reno 6-1 on a windy Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Lady Rebels improved to 13-6 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West play while the Wolf Pack fell to 9-5 and 3-2 in the league. It marked the first time that the two in-state rivals faced each other as conference foes since 1995 when both schools were members of the Big West Conference.

The victory gave UNLV the jump on a possible three points in the Governor's Series, which the Rebels currently lead 13.5-10.5. If UNLV and the Wolf Pack do not meet again in the MW tournament later this month, today's win means the Rebels clinch three more points for the Scarlet and Gray.

UNLV started the morning by winning two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. Aleksandra Josifoska and Janine Erasmus downed Sophie Stevens and Juliette Legendre, 8-3, on court two after Iren Kotseva and Ella Bourchier defeated Shelia Smiley and Carolina Konigsfield, 8-1, at the third position.

In singles play, four of the six matches went three sets, and the Lady Rebs gutted out three of them.

Aleskandra Josifoska, ranked 34th in the nation, fought off Michelle Okremchuck, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at the top spot; Lucia Batta, ranked 89th, stayed perfect in MW action with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Emma Verberne at No. 2; and Erasmus rallied past Legendre, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 5.

Two of the hosts won in straight sets: Nives Pavlovic, 6-2, 6-0 over Stevens at the second position, and Kotseva, 6-3, 6-0 over Konigsfeldt on court six.

"Today was a great win for the Rebels," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Our girls came out ready to play and endured some tough playing conditions against a really tough opponent."

Next up, UNLV will close out its home schedule by hosting Fresno State on Sunday starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. The team's two seniors -- Pavlovic and Bourchier -- will be honored before the match. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
