LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team gutted out a tremendous doubles victory to start the day, which was the key to posting a 4-3 upset of No. 55 Fresno State on a gorgeous Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels improved to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in Mountain West play while the Bulldogs fell to 12-7 and 4-2 in the league. UNLV also avenged a 5-2 non-conference loss to Fresno State earlier this year in January's ITA Kickoff Weekend event held in Berkeley, Calif.
UNLV started the morning by winning two of three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic won 9-7 over Rana Sherif Ahmed at the top position while senior Ella Bourchier and freshman Iren Kotsevawon a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3) over Olga Kirpicheva and Aishwarya Agrawal on court three.
The hosts' lead quickly went to 2-0 as Lucia Batta, ranked 89th in the nation, breezed by Agrawal 6-3, 6-1 as the second position. Kotseva then gave the Rebels their third point with 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 6 and Aleksandra Josifoska, ranked 34th, clinched it with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Sherif Ahmed at No. 1.
Before the match, the team's two seniors, Pavlovic and Bourchier, were honored on the court as the match was the final home date of the season.
"It was great to send out our seniors with a big conference win," UNLV head coach Kevin Corysaid. "This was an extremely hard-fought match and we knew it would come down to a few points here or there. This sets us up well heading into three big conference road matches next weekend."
UNLV will next head to Fort Collins for that trio of matchups, starting with host Colorado State on Friday.
