COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - After losing a hotly contested doubles point, the 65th-ranked and second-seeded UNLV women's tennis team responded by winning four quick singles matches to down host Air Force 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championships Friday at the USAFA Courts.
The Lady Rebels, who also beat the Falcons last Sunday to end the regular season, improved to 17-7 overall while seventh-seeded Air Force ended its season at 13-11.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead after winning two tight doubles matches. UNLV's lone win came at the top of the lineup as Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic doubled up Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake 8-4.
In singles play, UNLV saw newly named conference player of the year Aleksandra Josifoska, ranked 35th in the nation, sweep Christine Molina 6-1, 7-5 to up her overall record as a junior to 31-7. Batta, ranked 83rd, improved to a perfect 23-0 in dual matches with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tiffany Tran on court two. Her 33-5 overall record moved Batta into a tie for fourth on the program's single-season list. Senior Nives Pavlovic contributed a point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dake at No. 3 and freshman Iren Kotseva rolled past Anastasia Hueffner on court six, 6-1, 6-4.
UNLV, which has now reached at least the semifinals at this event for the 12th consecutive season, will look to avenge a 4-2 loss to Wyoming last weekend by meeting the Cowgirls on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT. Wyoming, seeded sixth, upset third-seeded Fresno State today by the score of 4-3. Top-seeded San Diego State and fourth-seeded Nevada, Reno will meet in Saturday's other semifinal. The championship is scheduled for Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
