Box Score

April 30, 2017

LAS VEGAS ( - The top-seeded UNLV women's tennis team lost the championship match at the Mountain West Championship for the first time since 2009 with a 4-0 defeat to third-seeded San José State on a perfect-weather Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The defending-champion Rebels saw their five-match MW tourney victory string snapped to fall to 18-8 on the year, while the Spartans claimed their first MW Championship, improving to 14-8 overall and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

San José State, which also won the regular-season meeting between these two programs, took the key doubles point in dramatic fashion. The teams split the first two matches, including the Rebel duo winning at the top of the lineup as Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang downed Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker 6-3. UNLV was close to victory on court two but the SJSU duo rallied to win the final four games to clinch the point, 7-5, and claim the momentum.

Moving to singles play, three Rebels -- Zhu (No. 2), Huang (No. 4) and Paola Artiga (No. 5) -- won the first set on their courts but San José State clinched it at No. 6 when Gaelle Rey finished off Jovana Kenic 6-4, 6-3.
