Sept. 25, 2015
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The host Rebels earned wins from all five singles players during the first day of action at the annual UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
Joining the Lady Rebels this year are competitors from Ole Miss, Long Beach State, Northern Arizona and South Alabama.
In singles, freshman Aiwen Zhu swept Ebba Unden of Long Beach State 6-2, 6-2 in the top flight; freshman Cristina Moroi got by Michaela Meszarosova of South Alabama 6-3, 7-6; and junior Paola Artiga downed Hanneke Lodewijks of NAU 6-4, 6-3 in Flight Two; while sophomore Mercedes Lopez Velez defeated Antonella Santeusanio of LBSU 6-2, 6-3; and freshman Reka Szentes rallied past Livi Hollosy of NAU 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in Flight Three.
In doubles play, UNLV saw its lone team of Zhu and Moroi fall 8-2 to Laura Valkova and Paula Sanchez of USA.
“We got off to a slow start in doubles but both players were freshmen playing their first collegiate match,” said UNLV assistant coach Tim Nichols. “In singles, it was just the opposite with all five Rebels winning their first-round matches. I really like the way we competed today.”
Action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday and is free and open to the public.
