LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Five of eight UNLV women's singles players are still alive after Wednesday's first round of action at the 2013 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

The squad's top two players, top-seeded Aleksandra Josifoska and second-seeded Lucia Batta, enjoyed byes. Santa Shumilina won her match over Laura Wehner of Northern Colorado, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0; Iren Kotseva downed Adriana Wojakowska of Colorado State, 7-6, 6-3; and Anett Ferenczi-Bako rallied past Charlotte Derbyshire of Denver, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance.

UNLV saw both of its doubles teams that competed ousted while two more duos had a first-round bye.

Members from 19 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
