UNLV Contingent Nearly Perfect During Regional's Opening Day|

SALT LAKE CITY (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV did not lose a singles match and went 2-1 in doubles play during Wednesday’s first round of action at the 2017 ITA Mountain Region Championships being played at the University of Utah’s George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Three of eight Rebels enjoyed byes in singles, including eighth-seeded and 83rd-ranked Aiwen Zhu.
Otherwise, the UNLV contingent only dropped one set in five singles matches. Mercedes Lopez downed Melissa Huchet of UNR, 7-6, 7-6; Jovana Kenic rallied past Rhoda Tanui of Utah State, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0; Juliet Zhang got by Wilhelmina Palmer of Boise State, 7-5, 6-1; En-Pei Huang blanked Madison Fenske of Idaho State, 6-0, 6-0; and Izumi Asano beat Maria Paula Medina of UTEP, 6-1, 6-1.
All eight Rebels will play in the Round of 64 in the first of two rounds of singles scheduled for Thursday.
In doubles Wednesday, one UNLV duo had a bye. Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li downed Sabraina Demerath and Tanui of USU, 8-6; and Zhang and Asano defeated Ghita Nassik and Daniela Cozzi of Southern Utah, 8-4 to advance to Thursday’s Round of 32.
Members from 19 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday each day in both singles and doubles.
