Rebel Repeats At Regional
Oct. 14, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Junior Aleksandra Josifoska became the first player in UNLV tennis history to repeat as a regional champion, easily winning the singles title Sunday to close the 2012 USTA/ITA Division I Women's Mountain Regional Championships, which were held this week at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Josifoska, ranked 89th in the nation and seeded second at this event, first won her semifinal match, 6-2, 6-2 over sixth-seeded Veronica Popovici of Wyoming; and then needed only 90 minutes to finish off third-seeded Sarah Pham of Utah, 6-4, 6-3, to take the crown and up her fall record to 14-2 overall. Pham had reached the championship match by upsetting top-seeded and 43rd-ranked Lady Rebel standout Lucia Batta in the semifinals, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
Josifoska also won last year's regional singles crown by holding off defending champion Batta in three sets. That means that UNLV can claim the last three singles champions at this annual event.
The Mountain Region doubles championship was won by Utah's Paige Miles and Tereza Berkova, who upset top-seeded Popovici and Simona Synkova 8-5 in the final. The UNLV team of Batta and Nives Pavlovic, seeded fourth, lost earlier in the day to the duo from Utah.
The singles and doubles champions from the regionals advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
"This is a great accomplishment for both Aleksandra and our entire program," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "Winning back-to-back championships is a hard thing to do and to not lose a set in seven matches against the top players in our region is amazing. She has had a great start to the fall season and we are looking forward to heading back to New York."
More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players competed this week at UNLV as part of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
