Oct. 15, 2014 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV won three of four singles matches and both doubles outings during Wednesday's first round of action at the 2014 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships being played at New Mexico's McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium and the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
Santa Shumilina had the most impressive performance, upsetting 17th-seeded Magdalena Stencel of Wyoming, 6-1, 4-1 retired. Paolo Artiga swept Chloe Jolliff of New Mexico State, 6-1, 6-1, and Mercedes Lopez Velez got by Courtney Schulte of Northern Colorado, 7-5, 6-4, to advance.
In doubles play, Shumilina and Anett Ferenczi-Bako eked by Arianna Paules Aldrey and Milena Toseva of Boise State, 8-7, while Artiga and Lopez Velez won by the same score over Molly Crum and Naomi Holopainen of Montana State.
Members from 20 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2014 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 6-9, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
