Oct. 16, 2014 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV has two doubles teams heading to the round of 16 after Thursday's second day of action at the 2014 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships being played at New Mexico's McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium and the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
Paola Artiga and Mercedes Lopez Velez stunned the event's No. 2 seed, McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry of Utah State, 8-7 (7-5) in the morning while Santa Shumilina and Anett Ferenczi-Bako downed the Air Force duo of Chloe Forlini and Carley Hatcliff 8-5.
Things did not go as well in singles play, however, as Shumilina was the only Rebel to advance, downing Evy Van Genechten of Denver, 6-4,6-0. She was then dispatched in the third round by ninth-seeded Sarah Richter of Utah, 6-3, 6-3.
Ferenciz-Bako did win her first consolation match, 6-3, 6-2, over Sara Korzeniecki of Nevada, Reno.
Members from 20 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2014 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 6-9, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
