Women's Tennis Nearly Sweeps Titles At Home Invite

Nov. 12, 2017

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV closed its fall schedule in style -- winning the main draw championship in every singles flight and coming one match-point short of taking both doubles crowns Sunday as the host school completed a dominating weekend at the Rebel Tennis Women’s Invitational.

Joining the Rebels at the Fertitta Tennis Complex were competitors from Texas A&M, Purdue, North Carolina State, Arizona and Grand Canyon.

“It was great to see the girls come out and compete so well against some of the top programs in the country this weekend,” said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. ”Winning all five flights in singles is a tremendous accomplishment. We also beat some really good teams in doubles. It’s certainly an encouraging way to end the fall season and we look forward to getting back to work in January.”

The Flight One singles final saw Aiwen Zhu, ranked 83rd in the nation, down Macca Olivares of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-4. En-Pei Huang needed two tiebreakers to take her Flight Two championship, 7-6, 7-6, over Amanda Rebol of North Carolina State. Earlier in the day, Zhu and Huang teamed up to take the top doubles crown, 8-1, over Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez of Texas A&M, 8-1.

Also, Izumi Asano rallied to win Flight Three, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 over Taylor Bridges of NCSU while Juliet Zhang eased by the Wolfpack’s Tayla Stenta, 6-3, 6-1 to take Flight Four. UNLV’s Mercedes Lopez won Flight Five for her program earlier in the weekend.

UNLV will next be in action when it hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Championships Jan. 12-14, 2018.
