Jan. 8, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team will begin the season ranked 50th in the nation as the year's first Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings were released.
The Lady Rebels finished last season ranked 52nd after posting a 16-9 overall record that included a 5-2 mark in Mountain West regular-season play.
Individually, junior Aleksandra Josifoska has moved up a whopping 69 spots from the September rankings to No. 20 in the nation after a 14-4 fall effort that included tournament victories over five players that are now ranked, including now-No. 8 Lauren Herring of Georgia and now-No. 21 Whitney Kay of North Carolina.
It marks not only Josifoska's career-best ranking but the highest for a Rebel since former All-American Elena Gantcheva finished the season at No. 17 in June 2006.
Regionally, Josifoska is No. 1, fellow-junior Lucia Batta is No. 3 and senior Nives Pavlovic is at No. 8. Also, Batta and Pavlovic make up the No. 3 doubles team and Josifoska and freshman Iren Kotseva the No. 6 duo in the Mountain Region, which includes schools in Idaho, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada, and select programs from Colorado and Arizona.
UNLV will return to action when it hosts the 11th Annual Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Jan. 18-20 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Admission is free of charge.
