Lady Rebels Turn Back Sooners

March 21, 2007

LAS VEGAS - The 54th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team shook off any rust formed during the school's spring break and defeated Oklahoma 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Wednesday.

The Lady Rebels improved to 11-3 while the Sooners fell to 5-7.

UNLV began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. The 35th-ranked duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva improved to 12-1 overall with an 8-6 win at the top spot.

In singles play, Gantcheva was off the courts first as her opponent retired while trailing in the first set 5-2. Nedeltcheva won her match at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4, Nikol Dimitrova swept her opponent 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 and Linda Tempelfelde improved to 14-3 overall as a senior with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph on court five.

"Today was another solid non-conference win for us over a good team," head coach Kevin Cory said. "This should give us a lot of momentum heading into conference play this weekend."

UNLV will open its Mountain West Conference schedule by hosting a trio of teams: Wyoming on Friday, Colorado State on Saturday and Air Force on Sunday. All three matches are scheduled to begin with doubles play at 10 a.m. and are free to the public.
