Another Week, Another Award For Batta|
April 4, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV tennis sophomore standout Lucia Batta earned her fourth Mountain West Player of the Week award this season and fifth of her career, the league announced Wednesday.
The native of Budapest, Hungary, went 2-1 in singles last week to improve her overall record to 27-8 in singles, including an eye-popping 17-2 in dual matches.
She is now the fourth Lady Rebel to win the award at least four times in a season, joining Kristina Nedeltcheva (a league-record five weeks in 2009); Elena Gantcheva (four in 2008); and Katarina Malec (four in 2000).
Currently ranked 57th in the nation, Batta began her week last Wednesday by nearly knocking off the nation's fourth-ranked singles player as she fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker to Stanford's Mallory Burdette, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). She moved on to down two consecutive Mountain West No. 1 singles players, defeating New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova (6-4, 6-7, 6-3) on Saturday, and TCU's 67th-ranked Stefanie Tan (6-3, 6-0) on Sunday.
Batta, who improved to 4-0 vs. league opponents this season, shared this week's player-of-the-week award with San Diego State's Julia Wais.
The Lady Rebels will next be in action on Saturday when UNLV travels to play Air Force.
