LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 61st-ranked UNLV women's tennis team will vie for its fourth tournament title but first in five years as it opens play Friday at the 2013 Mountain West Championships.
All matches are scheduled to be played at the Air Force Academy Tennis Courts in Colorado Springs, Colo. The tournament begins on Thursday with a first-round match between No. 8-seeded New Mexico and ninth-seeded Colorado State.
The second-seeded Lady Rebels (16-7 overall and 6-2 in league play) will take on No. 7 seed and host Air Force in the quarterfinals with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. PT. UNLV just downed the Falcons on Sunday, 4-3, in a meeting played in Fort Collins, Colo.
The winner of that match will play in Saturday's semifinals vs. the winner of No. 3 Fresno State and No. 6 Wyoming. The other side of the bracket will see the winner of the first-round match take on top-seeded San Diego State and No. 4 Nevada, Reno facing No. 5 Boise State. The championship will be Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
Since the event's inception in 2000, UNLV head coach Kevin Cory has led his program to a sparkling 23-10 record in MW championship play as the Rebels advanced to at least the semifinals every season except 2001, including winning it all in 2000, '02 and '08.
