LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 49th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team will vie for its fourth tournament title but first in four years as it opens play Thursday at the 2012 Mountain West Championships.
All matches will be played at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
The Lady Rebels come in riding a three-match winning streak and stand 15-8 overall after finishing 5-2 in the MW. Second-seeded UNLV will take on No. 7 seed Colorado State with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m. The Lady Rebels downed the Rams 7-0 during the regular season in a match played in San Diego March 25.
The winner of that match will take a day off before playing in Saturday's semifinals vs. the winner of No. 3 San Diego State and No. 6 New Mexico. The other side of the bracket will see No. 4 Wyoming take on No. 5 Air Force, with the winner headed for a semifinal date with top-seeded TCU, which earned a bye. The championship match will be Sunday at 2 p.m.
Since the event's inception in 2000, head coach Kevin Cory has led his program to a sparkling 22-9 record in MW championship play as UNLV advanced to at least the semifinals every season except 2001, including winning it all in 2000, '02 and '08.
