LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Players from a total of six schools will be here this weekend to take part in the annual UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus Friday through Sunday. That event will kick off the Lady Rebels' 2012-13 schedule, which was released by the school Wednesday.
Joining the Lady Rebels in the individual tournament will be competitors from Auburn, Long Beach State, Texas Tech, South Alabama and Northern Arizona.
Featuring four flights of singles and two flights of doubles, all matches are free and open to the public. The host Lady Rebels will field eight singles players and four doubles teams.
2012 UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS FALL INVITATIONAL FRIDAY-Play begins at 10 a.m. PT Doubles Quarterfinals Singles Quarterfinals
The tournament is the first of four individual events for the UNLV women before they tackle a full slate of dual matches beginning in late January.
"We have set ourselves up for a very challenging but exciting season," UNLV 14th-year head coach Kevin Cory said. "We certainly have some real strong non-conference matchups before we get into Mountain West play."
The fall lineup includes for the third straight year time hosting the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional at the Fertitta Tennis Complex from Oct. 10-14. The program also hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 18-20, 2013. It is there that a collection of singles and doubles players from top programs such as Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, North Carolina and Oregon are scheduled to battle UNLV's contingent.
The Lady Rebels, who finished last season ranked 52nd, will travel to Berkeley, Calif., for the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament. The fifth-year, 64-team event will have host sites around the nation and UNLV will be paired first with Saint Mary's (ranked 42nd last season) before taking on either Fresno State (57th) or host California (seventh) the following day.
The Fertitta schedule opens Feb. 8 with New Mexico State in town to start a 13-match homestand. That string includes the first visit from longtime rival BYU since the Cougars exited the Mountain West. Also coming to Fertitta this season will be nationally ranked programs such as Washington State (March 12), Florida State (March 13) and Fresno State (April 14).
The Lady Rebels will open league play with a match at San Diego State on April 5, followed by a showdown vs. Boise State in San Diego the next day and New Mexico on April 7. Nevada, Reno travels down to play UNLV as conference foes for the first time since both schools were members of the Big West in 1995. After Senior Day vs. FS on April 14, the squad heads to Fort Collins for a trio of matches: vs. Colorado State (April 19), Wyoming (April 20) and Air Force (April 21).
Colorado Springs will be this year's site of the MW Championships from April 25-28. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 10-12 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place in Champaign, Ill., from May 16-27.
