Rebels Open Season In Washington

UNLV women's track and field got its season underway on Saturday at the University of Washington Indoor Invitational, an all-day meet held at the Dempsey Indoor Stadium on the campus of UW.
UNLV junior thrower Monique Humphries broke her own school record in the weight throw with a mark of 57'-2.25" to finish fifth in the event. Her record before that toss was 54'-5.25" set last year at the Albuquerque Invitational.
Freshman Aja Evans had a strong debut, heaving the shot put 42'-1.50" to place fifth in the event while also recording a time of 7.85 in the 60 meters.
Claire Schreiner was the Rebels' highest finisher, tying for fifth in the `B' section of the high jump, clearing 5'-2.25". It was the first meet for the sophomore, who transferred to UNLV from South Dakota State.
Olivia Raya and Humphries both had top-10 finishes in the shot put as well for UNLV at the meet. Raya placed eighth with a heave of 39'-0.25" and Humphries was ninth with a mark of 38'-8.75". Raya also added a personal-best throw of 44'-5.00" in the weight throw.
Kenya Polee added a top-10 finish of her own, placing 10th in the `B' section of the long jump with a leap of 17'-3.25". She was just a quarter of an inch away from matching her career long in the event. Meia Tezeno won her heat in the 60 meters with a time of 7.95, but did not qualify for the finals. She also had a time of 9.24 in the 60 meter hurdles in her first meet in a Rebel uniform.
UNLV continues it season next weekend at the Mountain T's Invite at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 3.
